Anti-government protesters have clashed with police outside Trump Tower in New York City, with some wearing masks and wielding rocks and bottles.
The clashes followed an early morning march that began in New Jersey and ended in New Haven, Connecticut, after police dispersed a crowd of protesters who were blocking a major highway.
Police said some protesters had also thrown rocks at officers, who responded by using tear gas.
Protesters were blocking an interstate highway in New London, Connecticut after the demonstration.
Protesters also hurled bottles at police, and in New Britain, New York, protesters were heard chanting “We want justice for Trayvon Martin.”
Al Jazeera’s David Jordan, reporting from New York and Washington, said that the violence seemed to be aimed at highlighting the president’s handling of the situation.
“The protesters were not targeting Trump, and certainly not his supporters.
They were just upset with the way Trump handled the situation,” he said.
